1. What have you learnt from Learning Activity 3?
From Learning Activity 3, I have learnt about label or product label

Label is a term which refers to printed information affixed on a particular article of a container of product. The objective of foodstuff labeling is to guarantee that consumers have access to complete information on the content and composition of products, in order to protect their health and their interest. Labels also provide information on a particular aspect of the product, such as its origin, production method, modified organisms, allergenic food, and other specific regulations.

2. What are the social functions you have learnt from food, drink, and medicine labels?
The social function of food, drink, and medicine label:

a. The social function of food and drink label is to tell the consumers about the nutritional content of food and drink item. The consumers can compare two different items or products by using the Nutrition Facts to choose the healthier option.

b. The social function of medicine label is to tell about the medicine’s proper dosing information to the consumers. The medicine label gives information about what amount medicine to take, how to take it, when to take it, and when not to take it.

3. Are their structures the same? What are they?
No, they aren’t. The structures of food and drink label are different with the structure of medicine label.

Reflective Summary M 2 LA 2

To review your understanding about what you have learnt in Learning Activity2, consider the following questions:

a. What have you learnt from Learning Activity 2?

b. What do you need to do when you are expected to write a recount text?

c. Does an outline empirically help you write a recount text? What does your experience tell you about it?

1. From Learning Activity 2, I have learnt:

a. Definition of Recount Text
Recount text is a kind of text that retells events or experiences in the past. The purpose of recount text is to inform or to entertain the readers or the audiences. There is no complication among the participants.

b. The generic Structure of Recount text
- Orientation: Information about an event and its setting. It provides details of who, what, when, where, or why.

- Events: Describing series of event that happened in the past in chronological events. What happened? First ….. Second ….. Next ….. Soon ….. During ….. After ….. Later ….. Eventually ….. Finally …

- Reorientation: Stating closure, conclusion, or summary of the events that explains about what the writer think, feel, or decide about the events

c. The Lexico-grammatical Features of Recount Text
- Introducing personal participant: I, my school, my group, etc

- Using chronological connection: first, then, after that, ..etc

- Using linking verb: was, were, saw, heard, etc

- Using action verb: look, go, change, etc

- Using simple past tense

2. I need to structure the story in the recount text in a way that makes senses while using language that matches the same purpose. I need to know how language is used to structure the text and how the language features are used in recount writing to achieve the purpose. I also need to develop on understanding of how different audiences and purposes of recount texts determine the language choices to be made. This language is influence by:

a. Purpose: what do I want my writing to do or achieve?

b. Audience: for whom am I writing? Or whom am I writing as?

c. Attitude: how will I make my audience feel?

Here are steps of making recount text.
- Pick an appropriate title. Most recounts have title, and that title should summarize the text in a few words

- Set the orientation. The orientation includes all of the background details the reader will need to understand.

- Recall and relay the correct sequence of events. We have to make sure that the events are in chronological order.

- Re-orient the reader: near the end of the recount, it is necessary to note the setting again to tie things up and remind the reader of what the story was about. It can also include personal opinion about what happened or conclusion about the activities or events.

3. Yes, it does. An outline empirically helps me write a recount text. it gives my writing structure and helps me organize my thoughts from start to finish and write better. By creating outline, I can figure out how I would like the past stories to be retold for the readers or the audiences.

KOMPETENSI PROFESIONAL: REFLECTION M2 LA1

Reflective Summary M 2 LA 1

a. What have you learnt from Learning Activity 1?

b. What do you need to do when you are expected to write a descriptive text?

c. Does an outline empirically help you write a descriptive text? What does your experience tell you about it?

1. Here are some points that I have learnt from Learning Activity 1.

a. The definition and the purpose of Descriptive Text
Descriptive text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing. Descriptive text appeals to senses that tell how something looks, feels, smells, tastes, and sounds that enable readers to imagine the described objects, places, or people.

b. The generic structure of Descriptive Text
Descriptive text has structure as below:

- Identification: Identifying the phenomenon to be described

- Description: describing the intended objects using descriptive details or information about the object’s characteristics, appearances, personality, habits or quality.

c. The Lexico-grammatical Features of Descriptive Text

- Focusing on a specific object

- Generally using Present Tense

- Using linking verbs and verbs to classify things and describe appearances, characteristics, parts, and functions

- Using adjectives and adverbs to add information to nouns and verbs in the provision detailed information

- Using adverbial phrases of manner, place, or time

- Using words explaining characteristics or features (size, shape, location, color, etc)

- Using details to visualize the topic

- Providing examples (using the phrases for instance, such as, to illustrate, to demonstrate, etc

- Using the topic word or the topic-synonymous word repeatedly.

2. Here are steps which are needed when writing descriptive text

a. Choose a topic
A descriptive text usually focuses on a single event, a person, a location, or an item. When we write descriptive text, it is needed to convey our idea about the topic through our description of that topic and the way that we lay things out for the reads.

b. Create a statement
The next step is to create a statement that not only sets out the purpose of the text but also regulates the way that the information conveyed in the writing of that descriptive text.

c. Get the senses right
Next, we may list out any sensation or feeling that we can associate with the topic that we are writing about. We can provide full sensory details in the text with descriptive adjectives

d. Create an outline
The next steps is to create an outline listing the details of the discussion of each paragraph

e. Write the conclusion
The conclusion paragraph makes a summary of the entirety of our writing. The conclusion needs to be well written because it is the final thing to be read by the readers and will remain on their mind the longest after they have read the remainder of our text.

f. Review the descriptive text that that has been written
We read again our writing or we ask someone to read our text that has been written to have any criticisms and suggestions.

g. Finish it up
After doing some revisions, we finish our descriptive text.

3. Yes, it does. An outline empirically helps me write a descriptive text. Outline also helps me not to get stuck wondering what comes next or how to expand upon idea in my writing process. It allows me to categorize the main points, to organize the paragraph into an order that makes sense, and to make sure each paragraph or idea can be fully developed.

KOMPETENSI PROFESIONAL: FINAL ASSIGNMENT M2

    Final Assignment M 2

  1. Choose one of your classmates you think he/she is the best for you. Then, describe him or her in terms of his/her physical and mental appearances.

My Best Friend

Mira Cansri is one of my best friends when I was studying at State University of Medan. We graduated in 2011.  Now, I am so happy because we are in the same batch and class for in-service teachers’ training. The training is called PPG. It stands for Pendidikan Profesi Guru.
She is an English teacher in SMK Negeri 1 Tanjung Balai. She has pretty face. She is not very tall and has fair skin. She still has her long black hair when I saw her in the video conference in our virtual class with our instructor.
She is a well-organized person. Though she is busy in taking care of her little daughter and doing the online learning for teachers’ training, she never leaves her duties and responsibilities at school. Everyone in her school likes her because she is a good and friendly teacher. She is also good at singing. Her voice is beautiful. She ever joins the singing competition in her church and gets the first winner for that competition. She is also a smart and creative teacher. She likes to bring song to the class when there are teaching materials in accordance with the song. Most of her students are interested in the way she teaches them. She likes giving advice for her students to be more serious in their study. Though she is a little bit fussy especially for the students who are trouble makers, they love her because they know that their teacher is giving good suggestion for them.
She has kind heart and she is a good listener, too. She likes helping her friends when they are having troubles. She always helps me if I get difficulty in doing my learning tasks. She also gives her time to listen my story or my problems and she offers me some suggestions. She is my best friend and I will always remember her kindness.

KOMPETENSI PROFESIONAL: ASSIGNMENT M2 LA2

Assignment M 2 LA 2

1. Establishing a personal recount plan involving experience as teacher about how you prepared your students for or final examination in order that they achieved a high score.

My Experiences in Preparing Students to Face Examination

Last academic year, some of my colleagues and I were appointed to prepare our ninth grade students to face national examination and entrance test to higher school that has good management system. We decided to hold afternoon course for our students to help them prepare themselves for their examination from Monday to Thursday within three months.

First, we arranged the program from each lesson based on the graduation standard that set by the government. I arranged the afternoon course program with other teachers from English department. We arranged the teaching materials that were needed to be reviewed with our students.

Second, we arranged some questions for quiz. The quiz was done after the teaching material given to the students. The quiz should be at least 10 questions and be submitted to administration office to be copied for students.

Third, we conducted Try Out test for our student once in a month. We collaborated with independent course out of the school. We had collaboration with Ganesha Operation to give Try Out for our students to know the progress.

After finishing the program of afternoon course, our students were busy with their examination. All of the students passed the National Examination. Some of the students also succeeded in their entrance test to higher school. They were accepted to study in schools that have good management system, for example, SMA Unggul DEL, SMA Budi Mulia Siantar, and other public senior high school in Siantar.

2. Establishing a biographical recount about the principal of the school

The Principal of SMP Negeri 1 Sidamanik

Mr. Eden Purba, a fifty eight years old man, started to be principal of the SMP Negeri 1 Sidamanik two years ago. His educational background was from social sciences majoring civics. He graduated from IKIP Medan in 1984 and got his master degree from University of Setia Budi in 2011. He grew in Sarimatondang. As one who was born in this village, he wanted to apply his knowledge in the local public school. In November 2016, he leaded SMP Negeri 1 Sidamanik which located on Jalan Sarimatondang.

Before he served at this school, he was the principal of some senior high schools. He got lots of experiences as principal. He was the principal of SMA N 1 Pardinggaran from 1995 – 2006. Then he became the principal of the SMA N 1 Purba from 2007 – 2009. After that he became the principal of SMA N 1 Sidamanik in 2010. Then, the local education officer moved him to SMA N 1 Panombeian and served as principal of the school too from 2011 – 2012. After that, he became the principal back in SMA N 1 Sidamanik till October 2016. And finally, he has been principal in SMP Negeri 1 Sidamnik for about two years.

During his leadership, the school became much better especially in facilities. The school is used to have black board and chalk in the class. He changed them with white board and markers in every class. He also bought Infocus Projector. Though they are very limited, they are very important to facilitate the learning process when teachers want to have presentation.

He was also successful in the program of renovation some buildings of the school. The fence of the school was broken and the toilets were not inappropriate to use anymore last time. So, he asked people to repair and fix them. There were also classrooms with no electricity. Then he paid attention to them and had the electricity installation in those classrooms.

Mr. Eden Purba, as the principal of SMP Negeri 1 Sidamanik, managed the school and tried to facilitate the good learning environment for school members in his early leadership in this school.

KOMPETENSI PROFESIONAL: ASSIGNMENT M2 LA1

Assignment M 2 LA 1

1. Establishing a descriptive text about favorite person

My Mother

My mother, Mrs. R. Purba, is without doubt the most important person in my life. She is my number one favorite person in the entire universe. There are plenty of reasons for this including her unconditional love for me and my siblings, her constant sacrifices in a bid to ensure our happiness, her inner strength that makes the world a better place to live, and her immense wisdom buried deep within her soul. She is simply a precious gift to me.

My mother birthed four children and I am the eldest child in our family. One of the reasons my siblings and I are especially fond of my mother is the way she used to take great care of us, especially when we are ill. She is a very knowledgeable lady who made a variety of home remedies to help take care of the minor illness that we had when we were kids. Now, we have been grown up and lived separated from our parents. Though, we don’t live together, my mother always calls or texts us jut to know our condition. My mother always suggests us to stay healthy by reminding us to eat and drink well though we had a lot of tasks to do. This suggestion is simple but this is how my mother shows her care to us.

My mother is a hard worker. She along with my father is a famer. Though, working as a farmer is not an easy job, she never complains neither to us nor my father. She always helps my father working in our field to fulfill our needs and to ensure we have good education. The way she struggle to support our family always inspire me not to give up easily when I find hard life in my study and my work.

My mother is a strict person too. She teaches us to be discipline in order to have a good time management for studying and helping parents. Last time, when I was at 6th grade, I came home late after school without informing my parents. I played with my friends till noon. That time, my mother was angry with me. She punished me by not giving pocket money for three days. Even though I did not like the punishment then I now look back and realize that it was meant to lovingly correct me and help me to follow the right path when growing up.

As an outdoor worker, my mother doesn’t have glowing skin like those who have regular treatment at saloon and spa. She has a bit dark skin. She owns slanted eyes and short straight black hair. For me, my mother has the kindest eyes. Though she sometimes has problem, she loves and cares us tenderly.

Undoubtedly, my mother is my life’s anchor and the most complete woman I know. Her comforting advice makes difficulties vanish in a trice and her motherly care and love comforts us in periods of despair and pain. Her strong will and determination make huge mountains appear tiny. All my mothers’ qualities make her unmatched.

2. Establishing a descriptive text of the school where I am teaching at the moment.

SMP Negeri 1 Sidamanik

SMP Negeri 1 Sidamanik, also known as SMP Negeri Sarimatondang, is the one and only public junior high school in Sidamanik sub-district. This school is located on Jalan Op. Naihorsik, Sarimatondang. The location of the school is not hard to find because there are some public transportations that pass by this school. This school area is 10,155 square meters. It’s quite big school which has bordering on public housing in the north, public elementary schools in the east, the land of Golom Damanik in the south, and Sidamanik’s field in the west.

SMP Negeri 1 Sidamanik was built in 1963 by some local community leaders who concerned about education. They built the school though it was not permanent. Last time, the school had 12 non permanent buildings which 10 for classroom, 1 for teacher’s room, and 1 for principal office. Now, the school is bigger and the buildings are already permanent. The school has 22 classrooms, 1 students’ counseling room, 1 administration office, 1 teachers’ room, 1 principal room, 1 library, 1 mushola for Muslim to pray, 1 laboratory, 7 toilets, and 3 school canteens. The school is green with some shady trees. There are benches under the trees that the students can spend their break times there for eating, playing, or even just for talking. The school also has large field. It is usually used for having flag ceremony every Monday and having students’ creativity show every Wednesday and Thursday.

The school also has so many achievements. There are a lot of trophies that had been received from many school events in Sidamanik sub-district, Simalungun regency, and North Sumatera province. The trophies are mostly from sport competition, speech competition, and Olympiad in science, mathematics, and social sciences. When commemorating Indonesia’s Independence Day in 2018, the school got first place for the parade competition and English Speech Competition.

The average score of National examination (also called Ujian Nasional (UN)) for B.Indonesia, English, Mathematics, IPA in the late three years are decreasing. In 2015, the average score for UN subjects was 88.69, in 2016, the average score for UN subjects was 76.27, and in 2017, the average score for UN subjects was 73.30. From the data, we know that the score of students for national examination is decreasing. Though the result of National examination is decreasing in these three years, some teachers tell that the school still has better result if we compare to other school. The principal of the school tells that the quality of teaching and learning process needs to be improved especially by teachers.

Every year, there are more than three hundred prospective students who wish to enroll themselves in this school. Though the parents know that the numbers of students who are accepted are limited, they just register their child to this school. Local news at https://www.24jamnews.com/24jamnews/smp-negeri-1-sidamanik-kabupaten-simalungun-diserbu-calon-siswa-baru/ reported that there were 320 prospective students on the second day of students’ enrollment. The local students have high interest to study in this school. The school accepted the new students based on the rule from local education office consisting of three criteria namely the closest zone, students’ age and students’ school report or certificate. The students who live nearby the school or the closest distance from school prioritize to be accepted as stated in the rule from local education office.

In conclusion, SMP Negeri 1 Sidamanik has been developing rapidly especially for having large number of students who study in this school. However, the quality of the teaching and learning process and the learning facilities have to be improved in order to have better reputable school and better future for students.

3. Establishing a descriptive text about the principal of the school

The Principal of SMP Negeri 1 Sidamanik

Mr. Eden Purba is the principal of SMP Negeri 1 Sidamanik. He was born at Sarimatondang, 28th June 1960. He graduated from IKIP Medan in 1984 majoring civics and got his master degree from University of Setia Budi in 2011. He has been as principal of SMP Negeri 1 Sidamanik since November 2016.

He has a grand personality and good leadership in the school. It is undoubtedly because he has already got much experience in leading school. He was the principal of some Senior High Schools before leading this school. The way he leads the school is by giving opportunities for teachers and school staff to be responsible in doing their job descriptions without telling bad words or showing anger if teachers and school staff do mistakes in our job.

The principal usually arranges the teachers’ meeting at least once in a month to discuss any program that we have in our school. We also have discussion of any issues related to our school. If we do not understand any point, he makes us understand it clearly. He is constantly asking us “What can we do together to improve our school, our classrooms, and our students’ learning?” When it comes to individual students, we are encourage not to ask, “How can I stop this student from causing so many problems?” but rather, “What can I do to help this student overcome his or her difficulties?” The focus is always on the students and how we, as teachers can work together to make a difference and solve the student’s difficulty in learning.

Our principal is a man of high interest in students’ development especially about the students’ creativity. He loves to see student creativity. He supports the students’ creativity program which is held every Wednesday and Thursday. He gives the prize to the students or the class if they are good at their show like delivering speech in three languages, singing, dancing, answering quiz, etc. He is making the students at school are highly motivated to be creative.

The principal of our school takes great interest in his work. He really cares about the school members. He takes wise decision and creates a good atmosphere for teachers and students to grow well.
