KOMPETENSI PROFESIONAL: REFLECTION M2 LA1

Reflective Summary M 2 LA 1

a. What have you learnt from Learning Activity 1?

b. What do you need to do when you are expected to write a descriptive text?

c. Does an outline empirically help you write a descriptive text? What does your experience tell you about it?

1. Here are some points that I have learnt from Learning Activity 1.

a. The definition and the purpose of Descriptive Text
Descriptive text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing. Descriptive text appeals to senses that tell how something looks, feels, smells, tastes, and sounds that enable readers to imagine the described objects, places, or people.

b. The generic structure of Descriptive Text
Descriptive text has structure as below:

- Identification: Identifying the phenomenon to be described

- Description: describing the intended objects using descriptive details or information about the object’s characteristics, appearances, personality, habits or quality.

c. The Lexico-grammatical Features of Descriptive Text

- Focusing on a specific object

- Generally using Present Tense

- Using linking verbs and verbs to classify things and describe appearances, characteristics, parts, and functions

- Using adjectives and adverbs to add information to nouns and verbs in the provision detailed information

- Using adverbial phrases of manner, place, or time

- Using words explaining characteristics or features (size, shape, location, color, etc)

- Using details to visualize the topic

- Providing examples (using the phrases for instance, such as, to illustrate, to demonstrate, etc

- Using the topic word or the topic-synonymous word repeatedly.

2. Here are steps which are needed when writing descriptive text

a. Choose a topic
A descriptive text usually focuses on a single event, a person, a location, or an item. When we write descriptive text, it is needed to convey our idea about the topic through our description of that topic and the way that we lay things out for the reads.

b. Create a statement
The next step is to create a statement that not only sets out the purpose of the text but also regulates the way that the information conveyed in the writing of that descriptive text.

c. Get the senses right
Next, we may list out any sensation or feeling that we can associate with the topic that we are writing about. We can provide full sensory details in the text with descriptive adjectives

d. Create an outline
The next steps is to create an outline listing the details of the discussion of each paragraph

e. Write the conclusion
The conclusion paragraph makes a summary of the entirety of our writing. The conclusion needs to be well written because it is the final thing to be read by the readers and will remain on their mind the longest after they have read the remainder of our text.

f. Review the descriptive text that that has been written
We read again our writing or we ask someone to read our text that has been written to have any criticisms and suggestions.

g. Finish it up
After doing some revisions, we finish our descriptive text.

3. Yes, it does. An outline empirically helps me write a descriptive text. Outline also helps me not to get stuck wondering what comes next or how to expand upon idea in my writing process. It allows me to categorize the main points, to organize the paragraph into an order that makes sense, and to make sure each paragraph or idea can be fully developed.
