REFLECTIVE SUMMARY M4 LA 1

You will reflect on your learning the news with this module, by answering the following questions.

a. What knowledge and skills are new to you?

The knowledge and skills that I have gained in learning the Module 4 Learning Activity 1 -  News  are as follows: -          I know how to analyze the social functions of news reports regarding the issues, the target readers, and the points of importance -          I know how to analyze the structure of the text including headline, the newsworthy event summarized in the first paragraph, and the elaboration of the event in the following paragraphs according to the sources -          I know how to analyze the lexico-grammatical features of the news report. Here are the significant lexico-grammatical features of news report: a.       Short, telegraphic information about story captured in headline b.      Use of direct and indirect sentences to report the events according to witness or witnesses and the source person c.       Dominant use of past tense d.      Use of prepositional phrases to state the circumstances e.       Use of non-finite clauses to modify people or things f.       Use of non-finite clause to state the circumstances g.      Possible use of emotive words

b.    Which activities did you find the most difficult or complicated? Do you think they are actually      necessary to do? Explain your answers.

The most difficult or complicated activities for me in this learning activities are when I need to compare and to analyze the similarities and differences of some news reports in regard to the three aspects of the text namely the social functions, the text structures, and the lexico-grammatical features. It took much time in doing the tasks. Actually, it’s necessary. Now, I realize that there are a lot of things that that we need to know about news report.

c. What would you suggest to do to improve the module?

Here are some suggestions to improve the module. §  The module should provide accessible links to support the learning activities. I found that the link in the learning task has error page §  The module is already good. But, the learning material should be more detail.
