ASSIGNMENT M3 KB 1
The video (in assignment M3 KB1) explains how Teacher Tony solves
classroom learning problems using behaviorist learning theory.
According to you, what problems might arise if in a learning process,
behaviorist learning theory is applied?
The video explains how Teacher Toni is very concerned about classroom
management. Teacher Toni feels that there is a problem related to
student behavior, and then the narrator gives a solution by applying
behaviorist theory, which focuses on the stimulus given by Teacher Toni
and the students show good response to the stimulus. Teacher Tony gives
award called ‘Classroom Money’ for those who can obey the rules and
regulation of the class. ‘Classroom Money’ can be spent on class, for
example: using notes on a quiz or turning in homework late with no
penalty. Teacher Tony will take away ‘Classroom Money’ if the students
fail to demonstrate the behavior.
In my opinion, the application of behavioristic theory in learning
activities is good for teaching students especially for basic skills as
Teacher’s Tony target in his class: come to class on time, push in
their chair when leaving, have materials out when the bell rings etc.
But, it also can cause some problems to the students’ development
skills such as :
1. The students are not free to be creative in the learning process.
Learning that designed and implemented on the behavioristic theory is
objective, fixed, and unchanged. Knowledge has structured neatly, so
that learning is the acquisition of knowledge, while teaching is
transferring knowledge to students. Students are expected to have a
common understanding of knowledge taught. It means what is understood
by the teacher must be understood by students. So, students are passive
learners. The 21st century skills for students can not be achieved in
the process of learning.
2. Teachers get difficulty in recognizing students’ intelligence,
talents or interest.
The view of behavioristic theory on learning is the process of
formation or shaping. Habituation and discipline become very essential
in learning. The students tend to think linearly, convergent, and
unproductive. So, it is difficult to recognize the intelligence,
talents, interests and feelings of students in learning.
3. The evaluation of learning is seen as a separate part of the
learning activity.
Behavioristic theory emphasizes on evaluation of individual students'
abilities. The evaluation emphasizes passive responses, skills
separately, and usually using paper and pencil test. Evaluation of
learning outcomes requires one correct answer. When students answer
"right" in accordance with the desire of the teacher, this indicates
that the student has completed the goal of learning. Failure or
inability to add knowledge is categorized as error that need to be
punished, and the success of learning or ability is categorized as a
form of behavior that deserves to be rewarded. The teachers should
notice the development of thoughts or feelings that bring together in
the process of learning. The evaluation of learning shouldn’t be
separated from the process of leaning.
