The
Way How Teacher Toni Apply Cognitive Theory in Learning
In the video, Teacher Toni solves the problem of learning that occurs
in the classroom by using cognitive theory. He is concerned about his
students’ ability in understanding the concept of how to do long
division. Here are his ways to apply cognitive theory in the learning
process.
1. Teacher Toni identifies the students’ problems
He finds that his students have difficulty in learning long division.
Then he identifies the students’ prior knowledge and basic skills
before continuing to the higher level of learning activity.
2. Teacher Toni determines some prerequisite skills.
He helps the students to know basic multiplication, basic division, and
subtraction before learning long division.
3. Teacher Toni prepares the learning strategies.
- He creates the Mnemonic Device
Mnemonic Device is a technique to make it easier to remember something
done by making formulas or phrases, or connect words, ideas, and
delusions.
He uses the phrase "Dead Monkeys Smell Bad" which means "Divide
Multiply Subtract Bring down". This strategy helps students remember
the step of long division. It makes fun learning activities and
motivates students to learn well.
- He also creates Visual Aid.
Visual Aid is a tool that can help clarify a description or explanation
in the form of tables, graphics, images, diagrams / charts, maps, and
photos.
He creates a color-coded poster as visual aid to help the students step
by step through long division. If the students get stuck, they can look
at the poster to help cue their memory.
After implementing these principles of cognitivism, students are doing
a much better job of understanding, retaining, and recalling the long
division process.
My comment:
Teacher Toni has been able to apply cognitive theory in the learning process. In applying the cognitive theory, he focuses on how lesson (long division) can be received, organized, stored, and retrieved by the students. He emphasizes the students’ involvement in the learning activities. He is good in choosing teaching strategies to meet students’ characteristics and obstacles in learning long division. The using of Mnemonic Device and Color-coded Poster are actually simple, but they are effective to help students in understanding the concept and ways how to do long division.
