Answer:

  1. Teachers should have four competences in carrying out their duties to transfer knowledge to students. They are Pedagogical, Personal, Social, and Professional Competence. Pedagogical competence refers to the ability of teachers in managing learning process and developing variety of students’ potential. Personal competence is about good personality and noble characters of teacher.  Social competence is the ability to have good social interactions and social responsibilities. Professional competence related to the ability to master the knowledge or teaching materials, implement appropriate curriculum and do research to explore and create better classroom teaching and learning process.
  2. Teachers need to understand pedagogical competences in order to make an efficient teaching and learning process. Pedagogical competence is one of the four competencies that absolutely need to be mastered by teachers. Pedagogical competences are the ability of teachers to identify the students’ characteristics and the ability of teachers to make a good management of learning. Pedagogical competences also refer to the skills of teachers to deal with three aspects of teaching skills, such as lesson planning, implementing teaching and learning process, and assessing student’s learning. All teachers must be capable of designing lesson plans to meet students’ needs. These also require knowing how to create instructional materials and choose appropriate teaching strategies to help students with multiple learning styles. Being able to identify and address students’ needs and characteristics are crucial components of teachers’ job. Teachers need to learn about their interests, to recognize their moods and to make sure that all of them are mentally and emotionally focused on learning, so the learning objectives can be achieved in the teaching and learning process.
  3. Teachers need to have pedagogical competences of the 21st century by implementing innovative learning methods that integrate the use of technologies to develop students’ skills and knowledge. Teachers are required to change teacher-centered conventional teaching styles into student centered learning. There have been abundant learning sources that students can access because of the presence of information, communication, and technology.  Nowadays, the roles of teachers have to become facilitators, mediators, motivators and leaders for students in the learning process. The conventional learning patterns where the teacher gives many lectures (transfer of knowledge) while the students listen more, record and memorize is considered to be less precise with the current era. The competence of pedagogy of the 21st century teacher is not only able to hold the learning as usual but also required to adapt to the development of science, information and communication technology in the learning process.
  4. There are many forms of professional development to improve teachers’ competencies, such as:
    • attending seminar, workshop, and training from educational institution
    • conducting Classroom Action Research to improve students' achievement in the learning process
    • commit to learn the technology to have ICT Literacy in supporting learning process
    • join the professional communities to have better learning process by sharing with colleagues. For example: Teachers' community called Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP)
    • read books, e-books, articles, journals, etc.
