ASSIGNMENT M 5 KB 2
1. Definition of learning media from the perspective of Schramm (1977), Briggs (1977), Gagne (1990), and Arief S. Sadiman (1986) have fundamental differences. Based on your analysis (as a professional teacher) whose views are most relevant to current conditions? Give the reason! (Score: 50)
2. The development of electronic technology, as well as computer technology and informatics affect the use of learning media. Make the classification of the 21st century learning media! (Score: 50)

1.      Definition of Learning Media from Some Experts
The word media is a plural form of 'Medium', which literally means intermediary or introduction. Some experts give definition of learning media.
·      Schramm (1977) suggested that learning media is a messenger technology that can be used for learning purposes. Associated with learning, the media is interpreted as a communication tool used in the learning process to bring information in the form of teaching materials from teachers to students so that students become more interested in participating in learning activities.
·     Briggs (1977) defined learning media as a physical means to convey content or learning materials.
·     Gagne (1990) stated that learning media as a type of component in the student environment that can stimulate them to learn.
·    According to Arief S. Sadiman (1986) learning media is everything that can be used to transmit messages from the sender to the recipient, so it can stimulates students' thoughts, feelings, attention and interests so that the learning process occurs.

In my opinion, the perspective of learning media from Schramm (1977) is the most relevant view to the current condition because the process of teaching and learning is essentially the process of communication, namely the process delivery of messages from the message source, through certain channels or intermediaries, to the recipient of the message. In the teaching and learning process the message is in the form of teaching material delivered by teacher, while the channel or intermediary is used to deliver messages or teaching materials is a learning media or also called instructional media. Learning media using information and communication tools has some functions in the teaching and learning process such as:
1)      clarifying  the presentation of the message
2)      overcoming the limitations of space, time and sensory power,
3)      eliminating passivity on the subject of learning,
4)      increasing motivation in the subject of learning
Students use communication tools to search, receive, and process information in their learning. In addition, the use of media as a messenger is of course very familiar to 21st century students. We know that communication tools today have progressed very rapidly. Therefore, the media as a messenger is a view that is relevant for learning that implements student centered learning.

2.      The classification of the 21st Century Learning Media
It is recognize that conventional media technologies can no longer meet the needs of our teaching and learning process. They are now being replaced by multimedia technology in the 21st century learning. This technology provides a learning environment that is self-paced, learner-controlled and individualized. Educational technology means applications that can solve educational problems. There are different ways to classify media.
1.       Print media, non-print media, electronic media
·   Print media. They include: books, journals, magazines, newspapers, workbook, textbooks
·         Non-print media: they include: projected and non-projected media
·         Electronic media: they include: Audio media, Visual media and Audio-Visual
2.      Projected media & non-projected media
·         Projected media: they require light source for projection. E.g. film projector slides etc.
·         Non-projected media: they do not require light source. They include 3dimensional objects, 2dimensional objects, prints, charts, models etc.
3.      Audio media, Visual media & Audio-visual
·   Audio media:  this form of media carry sounds alone. E.g. audio tapes, record player,
·      Visual media: These are the ones that can be seen. E.g.  TV, computer, white board
·   Audio-Visual: this term refers to those instructional materials which provide students with audio and visual experiences by appearing to the hearing and seeing senses at the same time. E.g.  TV, video tapes, closed circuit television (CCTV).
4.      Hardware and software
·      Hardware: this the classification of machines or equipment used in the instructional process. It is upon these gadgets that the software is transmitted.  E.g. Computer, Smartphone, Television set, tape recorder etc.
·     Software: this classification consists of all materials used with the machine. They are the real carrier of knowledge or information. They include learning applications from internet.
